I have recently had the pleasure of helping St. Bede’s Primary School in Braidwood (New South Wales) with two flying flags (School Flags).

St. Bede’s is a Catholic Primary School is located in the beautiful and historic town of Braidwood which lay about 90 kilometres east of the nations capital Canberra (N.S.W.).

The school was originally established in 1859 and has run uninterrupted since 1878. That’s over 150 years – there has to be a record in there somewhere. Congratulations St. Bede’s!

The design of St. Bede’s School flags required (in part) the recreation of their School logo. Logo recreation is a service I normally charge a fee for, the reason being that they can take some time to do and can be quite difficult to match exactly.

For Schools, Sports Clubs and other non-profits and charities I do what I can to keep the cost down so, like in this case there was no charge for St. Bede’s logo recreation.

What is not commonly know with this type of printing (ie. banners & flags) where everything is on a LARGE scale. File (graphics files) that are fine for letterhead, lose their integrity when enlarged up to the size required for a banner, or in this case flag production. The logo files begin to pixelate.

Without getting too technical, I think of the pixelation effect as being like too little butter spread over too much bread. It just loses it flavour & colour.

Anyway, the flags where dispatch to St. Bede’s yesterday and I am sure they will be put to very good use.

I remember my first experience with markets. What an eye opener. I was selling some older computers I had picked up at the right price at auction. I was a computer consultant at the time and cannibalised these computers to put together a few good ones that worked well, like a charm in fact.

These were older machines sure, though I knew there was a need out there with a lot of people who wanted and needed a computer (a basic computer) but couldn?t afford the latest and greatest wiz-bang models from a big store.

Perfect I thought, I had the right commodity (a cheap computer), I knew there was a demand, my price point was good, this will be easy – I thought.

Not so. I set up my machines, even managed to organise myself some power for demonstration purposes. I was ready to do business? ?Market Style?.

What a long day it turned out to be, I spoke with a few people, some trying to work out what I was doing, most of them though fellow market entrepreneurs, offering this new comer some seasoned advice.

Some Old Wisdom Came My Way

At the end of an uneventful day an old gentleman came up to me and introduced himself. I had seen him earlier, a fellow marketeer at a very busy stall; he seemed to be busy all day and was obviously doing quite well. ?What you got here young fella? he said. ?Computers? I replied.

He asked me how things went. I must have had that hangdog look that said not very well because before I could answer he started asking me questions. First about the computers I had up for sale, where they came from, what they had installed on them, how old they were, where they any good and finally how much was I charging.

After a few minutes of telling him all about the computers that I quite literally knew inside and out he said to me ?You know your stuff don?t you??? I explained to him my other job was as a computer consultant, and was all about helping people to get the most from their computer systems.

He told me he thought I should have done well for myself that day, good prices, knew what I was on about and a good product. He told me I should have done well except that I had something missing. ?What? I said, eager to learn from this veteran. He looked around my stall and looked at me and said ?You haven?t got any signs, how will anyone know what your about without a sign?.

I looked at my stall, everything was there that I thought I needed, but this gentleman was 100% right. There was not one single sign to be seen. Not one thing to tell anyone anything about what I had on offer.

Potential Customers Were in the Dark

Computers can be a little intimidating to people who have not used them before, so most of my potential customers were scared to come up and ask about my wares. My potential customers couldn?t tell that I had computers for sale that I prepared especially for them. I had let them down and in the same token let myself down too.

Not only did I miss out on sales, people who could have really benefit from one of my cheap computers missed out too. All because I didn?t have a single sign to let them know what I had on offer and what I was try to do for them?

The words of a person I greatly respect Earl Nightingale, came flooding into my mind. ?Help enough people to get what they want, and they will help you get what you want.?
That day I did not help enough people get what they wanted and needed. I learned a valuable lesson.

The kindly gentleman who had shared this wisdom with me must have taken a little pity on me. He eventually purchased one of my computers just as I was packing up, I helped him carry it to his car. While we walked he said ?Remember son, a business without a sign, is a sign of going out of business?

I have never forgotten the lessons of that day, and often reminisce about that day and the gentleman who cared enough to share his experience. Who knows, may be that?s why I am doing what I do with market banners and vinyl banners online today.

How Are My Vinyl Banners So Much Cheaper?

One of the ways I make my vinyl banners better value than any of my competitors is due to what I call my ?Vinyl Welding? technique of manufacture.

Traditionally banners are sewed together, vinyl and rope brought together and expertly sewn by a very skilled worker. Those skilled workers are expensive to employ. So to reduce my prices they had to go (sorry!). I had to find a different way, a better way, and I did. It?s called Vinyl Welding.

Instead of creating a seam and sewing rope into my banners, I use a glue that is made of the same stuff that my vinyl banner fabric is made from. This glue fuses the edges of my banners together into a double layered thickness (for added strength and durability) all the way around the entire edge. Because the edges are all doubled over, and again at all the corners, the metal eyelets I use on the corners of my vinyl banners fasten into four layers of vinyl fabric, making them extremely resistant to tearing.

Using this ?Vinyl Welding? technique is not only easier (and therefore much cheaper to produce), it is much stronger than traditional sewing methods still in use.

If you have had one of these older style of vinyl banners that was sewed, let me ask you, where was the first place your banner started to wear. Along the sewn seams, right.

Of course it did, because that is the weakest point. The sewing itself has punched thousands of holes all around the edge of the banner making a weak spot that just like the edge of a postage stamp, that can tear and will eventually give way, it has to.

Since the vinyl weld effectively fuses the two pieces of vinyl together in a poly vinyl sandwich there is no longer a weak spot, no place to tear, another problem solved. Vinyl welding is stronger, simpler to manufacture and much, much cheaper to produce as a result. A saving I can pass directly on to you.

The other cost cutting method I use is ?No Ropes?. Your read right, no ropes. Have you ever seen a vinyl banner that has been hung up badly, or been left in a stiff breeze, they sag and frankly they look terrible and do not do their jobs effectively.

No matter how hard or how carefully you tie your banner, sooner or later it will sag. You can keep readjusting it of course. This though is a real pain. I bent my brain over this for months trying to think of a better way, different kinds of knots, different ropes nothing really worked the way I wanted it to.

I needed something that would stretch a little when the wind became to strong, so not to stretch or damage the banner itself, but I also needed it to retract again like a rubber band to keep the banner looking good.

Rubber band I thought, I?ll bet you know the answer I came up with already. I replaced my ropes with?. you guessed it. The humble ?Octopus strap?. Occy straps work like a charm. They are cheap, you can buy them in any large store and they do exactly the job needed to keep your banner looking fantastic.

That did away with the rope problem too (not to mention the cost). So that?s why my banners are the cheapest vinyl banners around (not CHEAP!).
