I do lots of vinyl banners. The majority of these being for business and sporting clubs and organisations from around the country.

Working with lots of different business, essentially working on an image for them is… fun. I have said it before in other articles, but it is true.

One such business I have been having fun with lately is Furry kids @ Home (Here is a link to their website furrykids@home).

Stephanie and the guys at Furry kids @ Home just love animals. Dogs, cats, birds fish, there seems to be no pet too large or too small they won’t adore for you while you are on holidays.

They even help with Pet first Aid. Now as a dog owner and pet lover, I think Pet First Aid is an important subject. I never really gave it much mind until I started working with Stephanie and Furry Kid @ Home. It is a great idea and thank you for making the information available to pet lovers its a fantastic service.

Have you seen QR Codes appearing in advertisements and on packaging lately? If you are not certain you have seen one, QR codes are a small “digital” square just like the ones I created on this page. You can think of them as being a two dimensional barcodes.

Before I get too heavily into this topic, I want to make certain I am not wasting your time.

This article and this content are really meant for business people who have a website, and would like more traffic (ie. people) visiting their site with the intention of finding out more about them.

Why Do I Need To Know About QR Codes

Now back to the QR Code and what it has to do with me. Frankly I think a Vinyl Banner with a QR Code could be an awesome way to send new visitors to your website.

Let Me Tell You Why

As I mentioned, QR Codes are like an updated version of a barcode. The good news is QR Codes can hold a lot more information, all kinds of information. The part that of this that interests me is that they can hold information about a website address – your website address.

Can you start to see where I am going here?

Why I like QR Codes is that they are a NEW way to have people interact with you and your business.

No longer does your print advertising need to be static. At the wave of a smartphone, your business card, letterhead or “Vinyl Banner”, can direct people to your website. Any page on your website…

To allow me to better demonstrate what I mean, just imagine this scenario. I will use me for the example.

Let’s say I have a Special on my Vinyl Banners that I want to promote. It may be a two for one offer I have come up with.

So the first thing I do is build a new webpage to tell people about it. The address of this page is;

This is a real live webpage of mine and the reason the webpage address/name is so long, is so that Search Engines (like Google) learn what my webpage is about. It helps me to place my webpages higher on Google searches too.

Now I can’t give too much more away (my opposition read my website too!), but I think we can agree that web addresses are usually too long and cumbersome to remember easily.

The only sure way to guarantee someone finds their way to the page that I want them to visit is via a “link”, we click on links all the time.

The link could be one from a search result on Google. It can be a link from another webpage on my site.

In the case of a Banner Special” I often use an email to my existing clients (with their permission of course), and use a link in the email to help them find my new webpage and more about my offer.

All good up until this point, agree?

The one problem with this is that the only people that see my Special Offer are the people on my list. Occasionally new clients might stumble onto the “specials page” by accident, not many.

The bottom line is that this limits the amount of people exposed to my Special and the potential amount of sales I can generate. I don’t like the idea of new clients finding my offers just by accident either.

Now if I add a vinyl banner to my marketing mix for this promo, more people would know about my offer, that’s good. People in my area, also good. And I could send them directly to my Special’s Page. Easy – problem solved.

What hope does someone else have of seeing my web address on a vinyl banner, and remembering it as they walk (or drive) by?

I could shorten the address to just B2bJV.com. Even this though is a tough call.

Should my new client be diligent enough to find their way to my main website, there is no guarantee that they will find the Special Page that they are looking for. And people will not waste their time searching through my stuff to find it. They will move on in less than a minute – sometimes a lot less ;-(

What though, if I add (or replace) my hard to remember web address with a QR Code?

The QR Code will point accurately to my Specials Webpage and it can be read by just about anyone who has a Smart phone.

Do you know how many millions of smart phones are used in Australia everyday? Well neither do I, but I do know it is a lot more than yesterday.

People Love Using Their Smartphones

I do.

Give them a reason to take their new smartphone out of their pocket and point it towards your QR Code on your banner (card, letterhead – everywhere).

The smartphone will read your QR code, and accurately remember it for later. Your prospect will also have the option of going straight to your website right there on the spot. Ideal for an in store sale. Forget an insert in the local paper.

Also remember, the chances are, that the people who have these types of smartphones will also have disposable income.

Ad Power to Your Marketing, Cheaply

In business or in any organisation, sporting club or church group (it really does not matter which), we all have one thing in common. Our goal is

PEOPLE

How we get these people to interact with our business or organisation is simply called marketing.

Now the difference between good marketing and bad marketing is easy. Good Marketing you get your new people to come see you very cheaply…

With Bad Marketing… well let’s just say you can pay WAY TOO much for a new client to come through your door (if any come at all!).

I’ve been mulling over this problem for a long time. I’ve  discovered that vinyl banners have the best “BANG for your Buck” over any other advertising media available. That’s how I got into the business.

A single vinyl banner can make a difference to your organisation – you probably know this through personal experience already.

And the difference a good banner can make is significant.

One banner on its own, though, can only do so much…

Boxers talk about “Combinations”. Why?

I have recently had the pleasure of helping St. Bede’s Primary School in Braidwood (New South Wales) with two flying flags (School Flags).

St. Bede’s is a Catholic Primary School is located in the beautiful and historic town of Braidwood which lay about 90 kilometres east of the nations capital Canberra (N.S.W.).

The school was originally established in 1859 and has run uninterrupted since 1878. That’s over 150 years – there has to be a record in there somewhere. Congratulations St. Bede’s!

The design of St. Bede’s School flags required (in part) the recreation of their School logo. Logo recreation is a service I normally charge a fee for, the reason being that they can take some time to do and can be quite difficult to match exactly.

For Schools, Sports Clubs and other non-profits and charities I do what I can to keep the cost down so, like in this case there was no charge for St. Bede’s logo recreation.

What is not commonly know with this type of printing (ie. banners & flags) where everything is on a LARGE scale. File (graphics files) that are fine for letterhead, lose their integrity when enlarged up to the size required for a banner, or in this case flag production. The logo files begin to pixelate.

Without getting too technical, I think of the pixelation effect as being like too little butter spread over too much bread. It just loses it flavour & colour.

Anyway, the flags where dispatch to St. Bede’s yesterday and I am sure they will be put to very good use.

Another type of vinyl banners I have been doing a lot with lately are Construction Site Banners. Many of them like this one that was destined for southeast Queensland.

This banner here for Rainbow Builders is a great example of a typical construction site banner.

Their name is clear and easy to read, I personally would have preferred to see their contact details a little larger, though these type of banners are as much about safety information and compliance with Workplace Health and Safety legislation as they are advertising.

An easy way to meet your Workplace Health & Safety Legislation obligations

All the usual warning symbols for head, foot and ear protection are in place, along with the “Danger Construction Site” sign, and all incorporated into one simple unit.

Rainbow has even managed to include their professional affiliation symbols for the Master Builders as well as for their Quality Certification.

A construction site banner like this one is a simple fix for a whole lot of signage problems normally associated with breaking ground and getting your site started.

In one easy step you can make sure your construction site is safe, and one that complies with Workplace Health and Safety legislation guidelines. And because you have all of the requirements rolled up into one complete unit, it is easier to ensure all your Workplace Health and Safety legislation obligations have been met as soon as possible, and with a minimum of effort. There is only one sign to worry about… easy.

And unlike corflute signage, your vinyl banner will travel easily between your construction sites as you need them.

Finish is important

When the project is complete, and your Construction Site Banners are not in use, they will store rolled up and efficiently out of the way until your need them again.

The banner you can see pictured here is one I did for my local Sailing Club.

Wangi Sailing Club wanted a vinyl banner to help thank their sponsors for their support as well as encourage them to participate again in the following year. It’s a good idea, after all as we all know “action rewarded is often repeated”.

The challenge was Wangi had over 30 sponsors to cater for on their banner, some major others not. To include these sponsors in a visually interesting way was a tough ask. I eventually came up with the design you see here.

I wanted to keep it interesting while separating the sponsorship levels enough as not to ruffle any feathers… and you thought Vinyl banners just about printing letters on blank bits of vinyl…No Way!

After a couple of minor changes to the initial design, we settled on this one. The banner was fixed the outer brick wall using dynabolts through the metal eyelets and has been happily sitting on the side of the clubhouse building now for the better part of two years.

While it is starting to show some signs of fading (that Aussie sun is tough on the yellows), it is still very effective.
